Melasma, also known as chloasma, is characterized by patchy discoloration ranging from light to dark brown or greyish tones. It typically appears on sun-exposed areas of the face, including the cheeks, forehead, temples, upper lip, and nose, and is more common in women, particularly between the ages of 30 and 40. As a form of hyperpigmentation, melasma results from an overproduction of melanin by the skin's pigment cells (melanocytes)
Melasma often arises during pregnancy due to increased estrogen levels. It can also occur when starting or stopping hormonal contraception, like birth control pills, or during hormone replacement therapy.
An estimated 50% of those with melasma have relatives who also experience the condition.
Melasma tends to affect areas of the skin exposed to sunlight, with symptoms worsening in the summer. UV radiation stimulates the body to produce more melanin, which explains why melasma commonly appears on sun-exposed skin.
